Barrow Road Shed's L & Y Pugs

Post by Hobbler »

One of the oddest loco sights to be seen in Bristol in the 1950's were the ex Lancashire & Yorkshire Pug 0-4-0 Saddle tanks that were based at Barrow Road Shed but which would also be seen at Bath Green Park and Radstock sheds.
Their presence in the area was twofold . In Bristol the Avon Wharf branch had particularly tight clearances and sharp curves for which a locomotive of the 0-4-0 type was most suited . At Radstock a particularly low colliery bridge that had once formed part of the Radstock Tramway and locally known as "Marble Arch" which gave access from the main yard to several industrial rail served premises could only be passed by the smallest of engines.
I remember seeing or have since seen photos of the following members of the class used over the years.

11202
51212
51217
51218
51244

There were rumours of other members of the class having been seen in Bristol and I wonder if anyone has any memories of which they may have been or of seeing them .

I seem to remember reading a book on the S&D some years ago that said Radstock enginemen preferred the Pugs to the two sentinals (47190/1) that were based there to get under "Marble Arch"

The firing/driving technique required for a sentinel , be it railway or road version is somewhat different to that required for a standard locomotive type boiler which is probably why Radstock crews having been used to the Pugs and Jintys were not that happy when the Pugs were replaced by 47190/47191.

There is a sentinel based at Midsomer Norton (south) S&D project.
They have vertical boilers which take up most of cab. It has A couple of vertical cylinders and water tank where boiler should be and chain driven.
This one didn't work at Radstock. Very strange contraptions.
