Mallard on the WR in 1963

Post by Robin Summerhill »

I recently found some archive footage on Youtube of Mallard visiting the WR in 1963, including running round its train in Temple Meads on Sunday March 17th.

For those of you who weren't there for any reason, it was bucketing down that morning (I was 10 at the time)!!

Some lovely old film. Thanks ...

I watched the whole thing hoping to see some Westerns or Warships, but alas I was disappointed .... :(

So, any guesses on which station the last location on the film is?

My money is on Bradford on Avon

If you want Westerns and Warships (and SR steam, and Deltics and Baby Deltics and a whole host of other motive power from the 60s, try this :) )

Definitely not Bradford on Avon, far too much space/trackwork for a start. My initial feeling was Melksham.

I dont think its Bradford on Avon - Melksham seems more likely but I am not entirely convinced .
Sadly I couldnt see myself in the crowd at Temple Meads - but it was a great day despite the rain :D

The Six Bells Junction website lists an itinerary for this special which is clearly incorrect (and they know it because they say "Route confirmation required") as: Southampton - Salisbury - Bristol - Swindon - Westbury - Melksham - Southampton.

60022 also ran a special on 24th February that year. The WR section of its itinerary was: Tiverton Junction - Taunton - Frome - Westbury - Newbury - Reading - Paddington.

So Melksham is certainly possible
