King Ed I and The Torbays - on Trial to Salop 10th August

Post by mow »

On Monday 10th August King Ed I is pencilled in to run from Bristol to Shrewsbury via Hereford. A poster on Nat Preservation has implied that there is a 10.06 start from Temple Meads. Has anyone any details of the times for the return run?

I think that the engine has to prove itself prior to the Torbay runs.

there is a rumour (post about 12.00pm) on Nat Pres that the King has failed and a diesel will take today's tour.

Does anyone know anything which either confirms or denys this?

Confirmed .

Just been down to Yatton to see it hauled by one of the "Royal" 67's Queens Messenger IIRC. Pics to follow...

Anyone know the reason for failure? Begining to think it's a regular occurance with Ed...

Haven't seen anything yet on reasons.

Although I was a little surprised to see that there was a five or six coach train behind the King last Monday.

I have asked myself if there is a plan B to use some other steam engine if the King is unfit, but given that the Torbay Express website links to the A1 Steam Trust and the 6024 Society, I do wonder if other locos would be used.

A couple of posters on Nat Pres are citing problems with the air brakes as a cause of the King's present failure to run.

Yahoo SWRG reporting of less than gruntled socks and sandal wearers wondering what has happened to the kettle or teapot at Teignmouth.

I suppose it is functional, but, not particularly pleasing to the eye. 37 or 47 would in my oppinion have been a better alternative but depends what is available at the time. Shame about the king still maybe next week.

I'd hazard a guess and say it was one of the back up 67's for the Taunton Cardiff's?

There are so many of them without much to do that it could have come from wherever...

I'd assume that the 67 was this week's backup/thunderbird for the Torbay Express. The steam hauled train is always followed by a diesel backup and if you've got to run the main train using a diesel it would make sense to use whatever you've hired in as the backup (you've already paid for it and it's going to be in the right place when you need it).
