Image in Wikipedia articles on Bristol stations

Post by WR Tim »

I was looking at the wikipedia articles for some of the closed Bristol stations and noticed that most of them have pictures of the station after closure but before the railway path. eg Mangotsfield station in 1973 with the ballast still in place and no trees on the platform http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mangotsfie ... ay_station

If you click on the image, the details it gives you say that it was taken from the geograph project and is under a creative commons license, so it may mean that these interesting pictures can legitimately be added to the Bristol Railway Archive site.

See here for more: http://www.geograph.org.uk/search.php?i=7364532 and http://www.geograph.org.uk/profile/7492

All by one photographer but there are probably others on that site with similar photos.

I've already got all those photos on my harddrive, but just haven't had time to add them. I reckon I have several hundred photos to go online, but I'm trying to move all the loco and unit shots from my other websites on to the wiki because I'm running out of space on the server. I'll get there in the end though!

Clicking that link, amongst other things, takes you to a shot of Staple Hill looking towards the tunnel, ostensibly taken in 1967.

I wonder how we managed to run trains down there until December 1969, when there isn't any track laid in the photograph. Sure-footed things, those "Peaks!"

A picture by Steve Selwood of the track being taken up in 1972, working towards Bristol, how they done that with it already gone at Staple Hill is beyond me!!

Tudor Williams - that name rings a bell . Something to do with the Bristol LMS Society/Bristol Suburban Railway Society in the 1970's ?

In this pic from the same series:

I reckon the 08 is one in the range D3503-D3508 (08388-08393). They were the first 5 of a lot built by BR Derby commencing April '58 and these first five were all allocated to 82B (St Philips Marsh), the rest of that build lot going to Devon and the NE region.

I can definately make out the "35", but exactly which one it is I can't tell. According to wnxx.net, 3 out of the original Bristol 5 remain in service to this very day, one in private ownership and two still mainline registered with EWS/DB Schenker :D

It's 3517. There's an 'all sizes' button on some Flickr accounts that give a bigger image!

It is! First allocated to Laira when it was still 83D and under control of Newton Abbot. Part of the same Derby batch though.

Now 08402, currently stored by EWS at Motherwell.

Makes one wonder, how long does it take from Newton Abbott to Motherwell (via Mangostfield and a track lifting job) at 15mph?

Sister loco 08405 (D3520) is I believe still the yard shunter EWS St Andrews Road? :D

08402 was cut up at Stockton earlier this year.

08405 was sent to Toton a few months ago.
