Known in our house as "the outdoor beer licence!" I went in there quite a few times, and the old man would be in every Friday night for his four bottles of Georges Home Brewed! (he only ever drank on a Friday!).

His parents lived at no.99, and we lived at 15, just up from Teewell Hill bridge.

Bells are ringing, i can remember you i am sure. That end of Gloucester road was a bit away from me, but names like and not 100% sure Dave Whiting come to mind. Then further up towards me was the Jones, Ray and Edgar, then you got to Hollymans and opposite from there lived Powells, then the Greens, the Selwoods, and of course not forgetting our most famous resident Roger Cook of Cook and Greenway fame.

Oh my memories.

Robin, now you may be the guy to ask,do you know of any pics showing the signal at the Seymour road entrance to staple hill tunnel. I have looked for years and never found one. That signal was one of my earliest railway memories, when i was toddler my dad walked me down the lane from Gloucester road, the one at the back of Rivera Cresent and i can remember that signal so well, it was unusual. I have never found a picture showing it.

Hollymans, there was John the oldest and Pete the same age as me.

Can't help you there, but I suppose thinking about it, its not the easiest place to take a shot and it isn't really all that photogenic a location. I suppose you could have aimed towards the tunnel from Teewell Hill bridge (which would have got the signal in) but you would have had to use a zoom lens to get anything worthwhile, and light levels in the cutting would also not be good. Add to that the fact that the sun would be in an inconvenient place for most of the day for a shot at that angle, and that probably explains why nobody bothered!

But the eastern entrance to the tunnel brings back memories for me, especially for being late for school waiting for the 0840 Sheffield to come up! If it was any more than a couple of minutes down, I would be on the carpet when I rolled in!

Horace (I don't remember a lad in the "outdoor beer licence" by that name!) - I noticed tonight that Bob and Ann Powell have uploaded a photograph to Google Earth from Teewell Hill Bridge looking towards the tunnel.

Unfortunately its quite recent (during the snow we had earlier in the year) so the signal isn't there, but the view from Teewell Hill is!

Open Google Earth, and zoom in to the Gloucester Road/ Teewell Hill junction to find the link to it.
