Pilning

Post by Davey »

Just moved to Bristol and started getting to know the area's railways. Found this website after a visit to pilning area. Atmospheric place particularly with an incidentent in the distance towards Bristol with a stuck DMU, several HV jackets and the speedy arival of a transit - signal problems? Looking at your photos of the level crossing with the gate post and gate still in situ, I had noticed that short rail lengths, including guard rail, are still in place to the west of the crossing in the grass.

Welcome aboard -if you're able then take the train to or from Severn Beach one Saturday. It's an interesting run including Avonmouth, the lower part of the Avon River, Clifton and the inner city of Bristol.

Freight workings to Avonmouth or Portesbury Docks

Post by Davey »

Thanks Grayo59,

I tried the route several years ago but there was a bus replacement so didn't bother. Have doen Redland - TM recently. Visited Sea Mills today. Does freight traffic use this part of the route or does it all go on the direct route past Filton (which I also visited today)? Also, can any one tell me how I can know when to see freight traffic to Avonmouth Docks or to the new Portesbury Docks extension of the Portishead line?

No freight on TM to Avonmouth/Severn Beach nowadays.
If you want to travel to Severn Beach by Train go on a Saturday as that is when there are thru' trains via Avonmouth. (certain workdays have through trains for commuters at commuting times too.)
