Odd sighting at Barton Hill ?

Post by MartynR »

Hello all,

Drove past Barton Hill depot on my way home from work today. Swear I saw a cl47 (47829 ?) painted mostly white, with the word "POLICE" on the side.

Anyone know anything about this ?

Cheers, Martyn

"To mark the end of 47 8s on Virgin Cross Country services in August 2002, Virgin and the British Transport Police got together to have a 47 8 put into a POLICE livery, to help promote a safer railway and discourage vandalism. Whether you are a passenger waiting at a station, or someone trespassing on the railway few locos would turn more heads and stop people in their tracks than when 47829 suddenly appears. Hopefully by doing so it has made people think again about doing something, and you never know who might be on it. The loco is still in use today but has been 'transfered' to Freightliner and can now be seen 'escorting' car trains amongst other duties. "

To add to James post. It's currently being used to train Virgin drivers the diversionary route through Clifton Down. Two trips a day I think.

(wish I'd kept the post in the gen group that had the timings, I'd like to get it going over Cheltenham Road viaduct)

It's not technically my post as I just googled, cut, and pasted it

It's a terrible livery really though...very tacky, plasticky

It just screams "Lego" at me :?

Ahhh, thanks very much. Thought I was going slightly mad for a minute there . . . (visions of the Sweeney chasing the getaway cl37 in it  )

Cheers, Martyn

I wondered why 47's have been running up and down all over Avonmouth area light engine. 47812 was on duty yesterday (seen at Hallen), so perhaps someone took note of your comments about the horrible police livery :)

And of course said 47 was also about when Nunney Castle was at St Andrew's Rd and going through Hallen on Easter Monday.

Remember the Police 37?

Post by jules »

Not the first time a loco has been painted in Police livery. Anyone remember the 1980's BR TV ad, where cops in a 37 chased a "motorist" driving an HST, telling him to pullover? And various other amusing scenarios like pulling into some motorway services in the HST and sat fuming in a "train jam" ....

Can't remember which 37 it was, but it was at Clapham Junction for a few weeks back then ... shame no "privately owned" TOC nowadays can't stretch to running a few TV ads (apart from Wessex sponsoring the weather on HTV)!

Or maybe they do? - I don't possess a TV :D

Thanks for the pic! I seem to recall in the ads it had a blue flashing light on the roof too!
