Berkeley Station

Post by Portishead Prowler »

Hi all,

Does anyone know the official closing date for Berkeley Station?

Only reason I ask is I borrowed an A-Z from a family member at the weekend, which was only a few years old (defo printed this century), and it still showed the station. So I just wondered if it had been kept open but unused or something like that?

Any help for my curious mind appreciated!

According to the book 'An Historical Survey Of The Midland In Gloucestershire', the station closed on January 4th 1965 and the buildings were quickly demolished. It's interesting that the A-Z shows the station, maybe someone is hoping......

Hope this helps.

Mark.

Berkeley closed to passengers on 2nd November 1964 (as did the entire Sharpness branch)

Berkeley Road (the one on the mainline) closed on 4th January 1965 with the withdrawal of local services on the Bristol to Gloucester route.

Both stations are featured on this website with 'before and after' type shots.

Thanks all, that's pretty much as I expected.

Still puzzled as to why it was shown on the A-Z, presumably, I guess, because of the existence of the flask loading facility, which, I assume, continues to be used in connection with the powerstation?

I dont think the flask facility has been used for a number of years as the station has been shut for some time now.
