Wow, that's brilliant mate! It works a treat. No more guessing " was that a railway or a hedge? "

update 11th Oct

Post by nineflover »

Hoping to add temple meads, old station, goods, and bath rd onto google earth tonight. have learnt how to import, rotate and resize scanned maps and layouts directly over the modern image, thus enabling a quick "trace" then deletion of the original document, making accurate alignment of ripped up and built over track to the nearest 10 feet.

photographs and information can also be added to each track and marker "tag" eventually enabling a comprehensive all in one layout, photo and information library. potential here is huge!

I've tried this on a number of computers now, but can't get to see anything! What am I doing wrong?!

All I get is an error message saying the requested page is too big to load.

Hi Pete,

not sure why you can't get anything up. I tried it on my grandfathers laptop to check to see what outsiders are looking at and it came up fine.

How's the new website coming on? i'm a bit confused, is it something totally new that will be going live, with a completely different layout to Bristol-Rail?

Try loading google earth first. My link should then open in a few seconds. Let me know how you get on.

i've started to add website links, so when you click on Bristol East Powerbox for instance its comes up with the info I submitted as a guest many moons ago and a web link to Stumpytrains signalling webpage :)

I think the Google Earth software may be blocked by the network here in work, I shall experiment some more. My home computer is a steam-powered affair (Windows ME for instance!) and can't run it.

The new website is a complete rewrite utilising Wikimedia. There's also several hundred new photos going in. because it utilises a Wiki engine I can add tons of historical information and magazine articles (that I have permission to use) and it'll all be categorized and easy to cross-reference without me having to edit tons of links each time something new goes up. It'll also allow me to allocate admins who will be able to add their own content independent of me. (although I will obviously be chief editor of everything :D )

UPDATE 15th October

Post by nineflover »

Relaunched Google Earth Page, changed to new link at top of this page. Spent an hour overlaying a 1948 super detail map from british railways illustrated annual no.8 of barrow rd area. got it aligned to within 3 feet.

Added the 4 main branches radiating from Lawrence Hill signal box and the main structures lost. The wagon works buildings have survived largely intact on the current satellite imagery, you can make out the wagon works siding still embedded in the concrete. The big skylight in the building nearest the Derby main housed the wagon traverser.

The boundary of the gasometer compound is intact, as are traces of the approach walls of days road bridge and the south run up to barrow road viaduct.

LMS lines now maroon, GWR lines green and S&D prussian blue. All lost structures will be lime green

Added Stapleton Road to Montpelier section tonight. The entrance to Stapleton Road Goods Yard was by a road bridge over the frome from Fox Road, swept away by the M32

Dont Worry Agency Scum, I've been waiting 15 years to be able to see all the westcountry tracks at their full, glorious extent in one view, and to show other enthusiasts what we've lost, especially the younger generations and this is the perfect tool. it will also be great for modellers, in N, OO and kuju rail simulator wanting to do accurate historic recreations. My accumilation of 50 and 25 inch to the mile maps, layout and signalling books can now be put to good use.

Any suggestions welcomed
