Is there any pics out there of a aireal map view of Bristol rail from the 50s when now disused lines would be on there, would be great to see and give a good understanding of what went where?

you can make out a fair amount using the arial photos on multimap.

the pictures are not bang up to date, for example the ring road is missing around mangotsfield so you can trace the lines.

i went along the lines using the pages on site, an a-z and multimap and now think i have a fair grasp of where everything went

would be cool to save and mossaic the multimap photos to follow the lines

I made a mosiac of the Chard branch from Hatch (Beauchamp) station to the outskirts of Ilminster where the bypass and housing blocks the route into Ilminster station...3.44 miles i think and little development...anyone want to start a preserved line with me?

Be warned...absolutely massive file...broadband only...and it still takes ages to load hehe

Quick load for me ! 8)

Ok, I don't have my rail atlas handy...

If you start at the bottom of the map and work your way up is that another branch on the right, and if yes, where did that go?

Maps

It is my intention to add maps to the website in the future. The plan is to eventually link every page to a map that shows the exact location, the location in relation to its neighbour, and the direction in which I was standing when I took a picture. If you've ever seen the magazine ModelRail, the maps will be similar to the maps they print showing where the camera was on the layout for each pic.

However, I'm not going to even start doing this until I've filled in a lot more of the gaps on the website, otherwise I can envisage doing them all once, then having to do them all again! :?

I've also started working on a chronology of the railways of Bristol. At the moment the database stands at a grand total of 45 entries!! I really must get on with these things!!

That's the former Chard Canal...it ran from a junction with the Bridgwater and Taunton canal to...well...Chard, and alongside the railway at some points, although the railway was the reason for its closer I believe. An aqueduct remains over the Tone (alongside the five arch railway bridge) at Creech St. Michael just east of Taunton, as well as quite a lot of embankment, but not really anywhere near enough to make it restorable...also the Merryfield wartime airfield was built over a section of the old canal, causing some construction problems! You can see the runway in the Hatch mosaic.
