I LOOKED ON HORRIFIED AS TRAGEDY UNFOLDED
By Vicki FitzGerald and Rupert Janisch
A WOMAN has spoken of her horror after she witnessed a man jumping under a train at Weston-super-Mare station.
The man, believed to have been in his 40s and from Axbridge, died in Weston General Hospital yesterday.
He suffered leg and chest injuries when he was dragged under the 7.31am service from Taunton to Bristol Parkway as it pulled into the station at 8.08am.
Kelly Field, a make-up student at City of Bristol College, was waiting on the platform when she witnessed the incident.
The 25-year-old said the man lowered himself on to the rail tracks as the train approached and waited for it to strike.
She said: "The platform was really busy and I was standing there waiting for the train to arrive.
"As the train approached everyone started walking towards it to get to the doors but I noticed a man emerging from the crowds.
"He walked right to the edge and was just standing there and I was thinking to myself, 'You are a bit too close'.
"I heard the train apply its brakes but it was still approaching.
"He was standing there one minute and then he literally lowered himself down on to the track.
"At first I thought perhaps he was a maintenance guy. But then I realised he wasn't as the train got closer."
The man was rescued from underneath the train by fire services and was rushed to Weston Hospital but died around 9.30am.
Miss Field said: "The woman stood next to him screamed and everyone started shouting for help.
"Staff were excellent and cleared the station quickly but I could tell from the number of emergency services that attended that the situation was bad.
"He seemed so calm, as if he was going to get on the train. I just could not believe what I saw."
Rail services around Weston were thrown into chaos throughout rush hour yesterday morning.
Services to and from the town were cancelled after the incident happened and the line was not re-opened until 9am.
The cancelled trains included long-distance services between Weston-super-Mare and London Paddington and also those running north-south from Gloucester down to the West Country.
British Transport Police are appealing for witnesses.
Chief Inspector Kevin Marshall said: "The man died soon after he arrived at the hospital. The train was pulling into the station and, although it wasn't going at a particularly high speed, he had substantial internal injuries.
"We are continuing to investigate this incident."
Anyone with any information can call British Transport Police on 0800 405 040.
