This is the original forum of the Bristol Railway Archive that existed between 2003 and 2013. I finally rescued it after it seemed unrecoverable after a large crash. I have made it available for viewing. It is locked, all posts to the new version please!
Here is a pic I managed to grab Saturday night of the Brunel Anniversary Limited Special running through Filton Abbey Wood about 20mins late on the return leg to Bristol Temple Meads. Fast fading light and looming hail storm resulted in a bit of dark picture...
I Made the trip out to Pilning in the morning, last real decent viewing spot before blasting into Severn Tunnel, glorious strong sunshine (not helping with taking pics) and a very impressive turn of speed down the hill with 14(?) Mks 1s and 2s + generator car in tow.
However late it was it seemed like 20mins!...to be honest it was too cold to get my hands out of pockets to look at my watch!
How late was it on the way back on Saturday then?
Hope you had a good day, was going at some fair old whack down towards Severn Tunnel when we saw it...unfortunatly the pics taken in the morning were pretty poor
Tangmere is no doubt a good engine for a "Spam Can" but not in the same class as the King for the loadings pulled on a regular basis.
I stand by my choice of a superior engine in performance, looks etc!
Any "seconders" out there!
Just to add some more facts to those already mentioned....
I checked my timing sheet for Saturdays run and on the outward leg the biggest delay was at Craven Arms Sched/ Actual 1216 1257 caused by being held at the junction then having to follow a service train. Shrewsbury was a cock up going in to the centre road, then going through the station and reversing back in due to some talk of gauge clearance resulting in timings of 1242 1330.
On the return leg, the timings were Shrewsbury Dep 1534 1623 , Hereford 1722 1818, Tram Inn 1731 1830, Abergavenny 1749 1850, Maindee N Junc 1810 1910, STJ 1859 1923, Patchway 1911 1935.
An excellent run, however, I was in coach B and the info supplied by the stewards of Kingfisher Tours was very lacking.
