Kingsland Rd / Barton Hill Dep¶t

For several years now I have read references to Kingsland Rd and/ or Barton Hill dep¶ts in which locomotives appear to be serviced ( including present day steam locomotives).

Is this the old wagon works just off the start of the Midland main line or is it thecarriage sidings just further on towards Dr Days bridge?

It is almost 50 years since I have seen this area at close quarters so all info is welcome.

Hi Peter,

Barton Hill TMD is on the site of the old wagon works. The stump of the ex-Midland Railway mainline, which used to be used for storing wagons awaiting work, is still in use. The site has been expanded somewhat since the days of the wagon works and now includes a large running shed for servicing Voyagers.

Just a note, on travelling back last night from Sheffield on passing Kingsland I noticed 2 very large diesils painted grey they had 3 cab windows (at front) and doors in the front ends, (you can tell I know nowt about trains and class of locos etc). Also there was a HST driving car (well I know a little) to continue the HST driving car was in a sort of orange colour and it had HORNBY painted down the side in very large letters. Question: is theis the largest mock-up 00 gauge loco ever built by Hornby ? or just an advert for them ?

This is a real HST - It belongs to Cotswold Rail and is one of their fleet of two (I think) power cars. Available for charter by all and sundry and sponsored by Hornby - I think it's cool in a kinda kitsch way.

The 2 very large Diesels mentioned are Class 37's.

There were more than two when I went past in the train yesterday afternoon. I am sure I saw at least four class 37's. The paintwork on them was either very poor or grey primer.

6024 King Edward 1 arrives tomorrow to add a touch of "glamour"to this depot for the next couple of months.
