This is the original forum of the Bristol Railway Archive that existed between 2003 and 2013. I finally rescued it after it seemed unrecoverable after a large crash. I have made it available for viewing. It is locked, all posts to the new version please!
Use this forum to talk about the railways in and around Bristol, or for any off-topic stuff you want to share. Also request photos and information that you are missing.
i been trying to suss this one for a while, can someone tell me about the line that runs alond with winterstoke road in ashton?
reaason i ask is a while ago i was watching "massive engines" with Chris Barrie on discovery channel, it wasabout freight trains and he was on the line down that way, i have never seen anything use that line before and looking at it it seems as if it gets use. looking at maps im guessing it goes from portbury, through pill, ashton then onto parson street somewhere?
This is indeed the line to Portbury. (the old Portishead branch). The line is used for distributing imported cars and coal. (in fact as I type there's supposedly a couple of class 60s down the Portbury end!).
I saw my first train using it just last week! 66008 on a MGR trundled through Clifton Bridge while I was driving on the other side of the river. Would make a great photo
Times for trains can be found by subscribing to Freightmaster.
Taken from the suspension bridge. had always wanted to see steam on this line having missed the GWR 150 trips.
Was very excited as had booked tickets for a trip to Portbury and also booked the trip via Clifton Down to Avonmouth....... only for it to run via Henbury.....hopefully it will be rerun sometime soon.
hi, cheers for the info.
so does theline run along the side if the river opposite the portway?
i see it by the allotments by cumberland basin but pretty much lose it there.
That's it. Past the allotments, under the suspension bridge in a tunnel, through Leigh Woods on embankments and in more tunnels, and through green fields before entering Pill on a large viaduct.

i always thought that was disused
It was in fact disused for about 20 years but was revived, I think, around the end of 2001. the revival included building a new line into Portbury Dock which had never previously been rail-served.
