CHAOS ON RAILS AFTER LIGHTNING

12:35 - 05 July 2005
A Lightning bolt which hit ground near Bristol Parkway station caused chaos on the railways after the power supply to signals failed. Services through the north Bristol station were delayed for up to an hour and a half after the lightning struck, at around 3pm.

First Great Western and Virgin Trains, which both run through Parkway, had their trains diverted, and did not call at the station.

Trains were running again just before 4.30pm but delays carried on until 7pm.

A South West and South Wales spokesman for Network Rail, which is in charge of Britain's railway lines, said: "A bolt of lightning was seen in the area which we think affected the signalling."
