This is the original forum of the Bristol Railway Archive that existed between 2003 and 2013. I finally rescued it after it seemed unrecoverable after a large crash. I have made it available for viewing. It is locked, all posts to the new version please!
Use this forum to talk about the railways in and around Bristol, or for any off-topic stuff you want to share. Also request photos and information that you are missing.
I don't ever remember being slung out of any Bristol depot - I beat the odd hasty retreat from Bath Road as I recall, after going over the wall at the back, but never actually slung out.
I only ever recall being chased out of the sidings where the Warships and D63xx were dumped at St Philips Marsh. We used to go there on wet Sunday afternoons in the 70s to see what we could unscrew and keep, somewhat in awe of the machines that only a few months previously had been powering up Filton Bank. Didn't really understand what was happening at our tender age - it seemed awfully wrong and I guess to us, it was the same as the loss of steam to the previous generation.
One afternoon, there happened to be one railway staffer there (very rare for anyone to be around) and he shouted at us "Get off out of it" or something like that. We took off and ran - but it probably wouldn;t have mattered if we'd just ignored him - he didn't seem that keen to chase us from afar.
If only I'd kept all those bits - they would come in useful now at Williton!
Anyhow, onto the reason for refreshing this thread on Barrow Road
When we were having our Railway Archive pub meet up at the Barley Mow, several pubs in the Barrow Road area were mentioned as being "where the Depot was run from". I've found details of many former pubs in the area, such as The Forgemans and others long gone from the excellent Bristol's Lost Pubs website.
But, I am sure this record is incomplete. Any chance we could have a think and try and name and locate the other pubs around Barrow Road shed? In particular, one was mentioned as being very closely connected with depot life and it had a strange name, something like "The Scion" or similar? Where was it and what was the exact name anyone please?
