HONOUR FOR RAIL CRASH HERO
12:00 - 13 June 2005
The Exeter-based train driver killed last November in the Berkshire rail crash is to have an engine named after him. A special dedication ceremony is being planned for June 25 at Exeter's St David's Station.
The family of Stan Martin are to be invited and in attendance will be Alison Foster, managing director of First Great Western.
Ms Foster praised Mr Martin shortly after the crash saying: "We know from the on-train data recorder that he acted absolutely correctly and did everything he could to avert this tragedy."
June 25 would have been Mr Martin's 55th birthday.
Mr Martin, who had worked in the railway industry for nearly 40 years, was killed, along with five others, when the First Great Western train he was driving was derailed on a level crossing at Ufton Nervet after Brian Drysdale drove his car onto the crossing and stopped.
An interim report from the health and Safety Executive praises Mr Martin's quick actions, in applying the brakes and shutting down the electricity to prevent fires, which lessened the impact of the collision and saved lives.
