Memory playing tricks again. I could have sworn it was later than that but thinking back, I was still at primary school so it must have been prior to 1964. After that, I had to go to school on Saturday mornings and occasionally play rugby in the afternoons = hated it!
Thank you for the link to Max Williams. I can vaguely remember a daughter helping out at times. I parted with most of my pocket money in that shop, probably all except the 2d saved for a platform ticket at BTM. At some point, this had to be secreted in your socks after having had our money taken by a gang of ruffians who hung around in the park in Midland Road. Today it would be called 'mugging'.

After the last days of Barrow Road
During my spotting days at 82E, I saw a few `Britannias`from Crewe and Oxley, also several `9F`s`, of which a handful were allocated to Barrow Road - but cannot recall seeing locos of either class actually inside the roundhouse.
Am I right in saying that the 82E turntable could not accomodate larger engines - If so, where were these engines turned ?
Presumably, the Brits from Oxley which worked the Wolverhampton-Ilfracombe passenger workings to and from BTM in Summer 1965 were turned on the North Somerset triangle - but did locos from freight workings turn at Mangotsfield ?
I am sure that someone out there knows the answer !

I believe it is true that Britannias were not turned on the turntable, but either on the Dr Days or Mangotsfield triangles. I am not sure about the 9F's, but they could certainly be found on the freight engine line leading from the right hand exit of the shed looking down from the steps, which means they would have to had used the turntable to get there.
This shot shows a 9F about to enter the middle line into the shed

Trallgar/Shovel/oldchapie,
Many thanks for the replies, much appreciated
I have just referred to my `Observer`s book of Railway Locomotives`, to find that the Brits were a whopping 2ft 7ins longer than a 9F.
Most of my visits to 82E were on a Sunday afternoon, and cannot remember actually seeing the turntable in use.
Although I became interested in railways around Oct 1962, I did not actually see a Britannia until March/April 1964
Leaving 82B after a Sunday visit, we approached the tender of what was obviously a BR Standard near the repair shop.
Another 9F,I thought - Was I pleased to find myself wrong and discover 70017 `Arrow`!!
Funnily enough, a visit on the following Sunday found 70018 `Flying Dutchman`being hauled out of the roundhouse by `Modified Hall` 6999.
A few days later, 70018 was at the coal stage, being prepared for the journey home
My guess is that the Brits had worked down on a parcels train from the Crewe area (both were allocated to 5B) - Crewe South Britannias also occasionally appeared at 82E after the closure of SPM

The records for the Brits that I have are :
Tuesday 21 September 1965 1M91 70000
Thursday 23 September 1965 3M00 70011 (probably off 1V93)
Tuesday 28 September 1965 1V93 70032
Wednesday 13 October 1965 1V93 70020
Tuesday 16 November 1965 1V93 70011
You're right about Crewe Britannia's working down to Barrow Road - there are some examples from the last few months of the shed. They would arrive on the 1V93 13/22 arrival from Liverpool, which was the only North to West which did not stop for reversal at Newport and so they could work right through to Bristol. Sometimes they went back on the 3M00 23/45 Crewe parcels or the next day's 1M91 11/53 to Liverpool, which again did not stop at Newport. Ironically these were the lodging turns involving through working by Newton Abbot and Shrewsbury Castles until dieselisation in March 1961 and were the first North to West trains to be dieselised.Crewe South Britannias also occasionally appeared at 82E after the closure of SPM

I thinks Brits also had a 1965 Summer Sats working to Bristol on a Woverhampton Low Level to Ilfracombe service via Birmingham Snow Hill and Stratford on Avon. Don't have time to check things at present but I am pretty sure George Heiron photographed 70045 at Bristol and Ben Ashworth the same loco in the Cheltenham area. Something at the back of my mind tells me that three Brits were allocated Oxley for this and possibly other jobs that Summer.

That is true. Oxley were allocated two for the Summer services, 70045 and 70053, which were the regular performers. On the first Saturday I recall 70030 appeared on one of the workings. There are certainly photos of 70045 on Barrow Road Shed on google.I thinks Brits also had a 1965 Summer Sats working to Bristol on a Woverhampton Low Level to Ilfracombe service

Interesting to see the workings that brought the Crewe `Brits` to Bristol - My years of wondering are now over !
If I remember correctly, a third Britannia -70047- was allocated to Oxley for the Wolverhampton to Ilfracombe trains. I well recall the disappointment of discovering that it was the solitary unnamed member of the class.
Harking back to my previous thoughts on 9F`s not using the 82E roundhouse, I have found the following comments in a 1965 `Railway Observer, providing further evidence that I was mistaken...
"Barrow Road Shed, Bristol.
On 26th December (1964), eighty steam locos were in evidence.
Stored in a siding nearby were 30952, 31406, 44102, 44534 & 53807 on their way to South Wales.
Dead in the roundhouse with both nameplates removed was 92220 Evening Star"

70045/47/53 were all allocated to Oxley during the summer of 1965, so there would be a reasonable chance of seeing all of them on these trains.ömarshæUnö wrote: If I remember correctly, a third Britannia -70047- was allocated to Oxley
Crewe South had 14 of them at the same time (70000/12/14/18/23/24/25/27/28/43/50/51/52/54) so it was also quite likely that some of these might turn up in Bristol.
At the time, of course, the move towards diesel traction was gathering pace, and the LMR had a number of these engines still in reasonable condition with little express passenger work left to do.
Perhaps more than almost all other classes, they were very nomadic in their allocations. All 3 of Oxley's allocation arrived from Holyhead in June 1965 and were all transferred away again in September - to Banbury for another 4 months and then on to Kingmoor in January 1966, where the majority of the class then ended their working days.
70030 was at Crewe South until June 1965 when it moved to Upperby - highlighting again the nomadic tendencies of the clas!
