After hearing and reading of the name many times can some-one tell me what the term refers too and why it was called thus, probably something quite simple many thanks.

After hearing and reading of the name many times can some-one tell me what the term refers too and why it was called thus, probably something quite simple many thanks.

I think I remember reading that it was a siding for goods that the customers unloaded and took away themselves - as opposed to being delivered by the railway's cartage service. The name might denote that such traffic was charged by the mile.
