Bath Road based Class 08s in 1970
Bath Road based Class 08s in 1970
I'm really hoping that someone can help me!
I'm building a model of the maintenance shed at Bath Road as it was in May 1970 (pre TOPS) and I'm trying to find some info as to Bath Road based Class 08 shunters at this time - Particularly which ones were in blue and whether they were dual braked etc.
I've been trying for ages and I'm getting nowhere!
Any help would be very much appreciated
Yours expectantly and hopeful!!

I think you are refering to the class 03s that were based at Bath Road?Andrew wrote:I'm afraid I can't help with numbers, but I am pretty sure most if not all were dual braked by 1970. They were mostly semi-permenantly coupled to "shunting runner" wagons - mainly I think to improve track circuit operation as well as providing storage for shunting poles etc.
Sorry if i'm wrong, it was a long time ago!

Although I was on the railway in 1970, and transferred to Bath Road in April 1971, I must admit that diesel shunters were not exactly at the top of my list of interesting things to observe
The closest data that I have is in an October 1966 Locoshed book, and 82A's class 03 and 08 shunters were as follows at that time (all pre-TOPS numbering so those of you who only work with post-TOPS numbers will have to do your own research!)
Class 03
D2195 only - presumably there to work Avonside
Class 08
D3000/1/2/3, D3182/3/4/5, D3503/5/6/7/8, D3750/1, D3803/5/6, D4015/7/8/20/2/4/5/6 - total 26
I'd forgotten there were so many of them built

An 03 was regularly outstationed at Lawrence Hill to work the Avonside branch. See here: http://bristol-rail.co.uk/wiki/File:D2121-1.jpg
03's were frequently paired with match wagons as they were well known for not operating track circuits too well, though I only have vague recollections of ever seeing this at TM.
One of the seemingly continuous duties for an 08 at TM up until the early 70's was shunting wagons in and out of the old TM goods depot on the steeply graded spur next to Platform 1. It went on all day (and probably all night too).

I am 99.9% certain at least some of the 08s had match wagons. I mainly remember seeing 03s at Lawrence Hillcarpetcone wrote:I think you are refering to the class 03s that were based at Bath Road?Andrew wrote:I'm afraid I can't help with numbers, but I am pretty sure most if not all were dual braked by 1970. The 08"s and the 03 at Bath road depot
The 03 had a wagon attached to operate the track circuits.
The 08"s had a brake van attached for use of the shunters.
The workings for the pilots at Temple meads were as follows.
The west end pilot known as the upside pilot worked 24 hours seven days a week. This pilot was assisted by an additional loco which worked in the evening went to shed about 02-00hrs.
The down side pilot was also 24 hrs
if you need more about the turns i think i can remember most of the workings
Incidently when i went to Bath rd in January 1950 the pilot link at Temple meads the loco "s were steam 55xx and 77xx types.

Isn't this an 08 with shunter match wagon?Andrew wrote:OF COURSE! The O8s had brake vans, the 03s had match wagons. Apologies for being so emphatic earlier that O8s had match wagons - and thanks to "Oldchapie" for pointing this out. My memory has started playing tricks on me!!
