Steve
Thanks for the latest gala information, visited your websites, superb!
Highly recommended to all railway enthusiasts.
I believe the 9F is coming in by road as it does not have mainline clearance certification.

45407 and 76079 arrived by rail in the small hours, 73129 came in by road this evening. Only leaves the 9F - 92212 or a substitute - and Tangmere which is working in on Saturday to have the full gala line up on the line.

Fascinating photos, I only knew the area in the late 70's/early 80's, it took a while to work out where they were in relation to things I knew. While I was living around there they were removing the embankment that the arches had led to when a large unexploded bomb was found buried deep in it ...

On one occasion the clag from an HST going out over the level crossing at Minehead was sufficient to set off the smoke alarms in Butlins!

As for the diesel gala, as has been said there won't be one this year for the reason that last years wasn't very succesful and, in effect, left the railway worse ...

Re: Commuter line speeds

if the line was upgraded for commuter line speeds that steam engines would be allowed to travel along it

Heritage railway general speed and safety rules: locomotives (steam or diesel) 25mph. Multiple units 40mph.

Of course, all vehicles have to be inspected "fit-to-run" and there are additional ...

i posted an old pic of yatton station from '63 with the flying scotsman passing through, it is in the wrington vale cheddar strawberry line thread, im quite proud with myself tracking it back down after many years!

A very interesting photo, it shows how things have changed there. Back then Yatton ...

They had reached agreement to buy a pannier and had started work on it at Bath Road (I think) before actually completing the purchase, BR suddenly sold it for scrap from under them, track lifting took place fairly rapidly while they were still negociating the sale... All in all I'm sure the Ministry ...

Nice pic! I wonder how Network Rail would feel if they had to maintain trackwork like that nowadays..
I don't think they know where to start! It is surprising looking back at old photos just how complex the track was at comparatively minor places such as Yatton.

Anyway, for those that were there ...

What did they push it up the bank with?
Flying Scotsman went up light engine, the moguls had a couple of panniers on the back when they brought the train in from Ilfracombe.

I can remember visiting a friend who had moved to Clevedon during the last summer of operation when it was a single car DMU. As Martin said there was no pointwork at Clevedon by then. Part of the line had been relayed with FB rail on concrete sleepers, no doubt to inflate costs to aid the closure ...

Another loco comes to mind.

There used to be an old 03 at the Birds scrapyard on Stapleton Road. Anyone got a pic? I never saw it moving, but used to crane my neck every time I went past in a train to see if it was still there.

Just found this - must have been asleep when it was first posted ...

A hole in a piston could have been to blame - blows all the oil out pretty quickly.
