Road salt trains

In Mike Vincent's book about the Portishead branch, it makes reference to road salt trains on the wrapping wharf branch which were stored in a siding near the SS Great Britain. Does anyone have any recollections of this?

The few times I saw the engineering sidings being shunted the work was being done by an 08. The gated sidings were used to store the Tunnel Inspection Train.

Many thanks for all the information. So were there a few engineer sidings in the gated area as well as the siding for the inspection train ...

Many thanks Andy. If you have any recollections about the coal trains up to Western fuels or the sidings at Ashton Meadows, please see my other post on the General chat board. Just trying to collect as much information as possible. Many thanks again.

Re: Is this Ashton Gate?

Thanks for your recollections. So trains were assembled there and then sent to East depot to then be sent where they needed to be sent?

I was wondering if stuff like ballast was loaded at Ashton Meadows?

Do you remember if the civil engineers just used the sidings in the depot or the ones outside ...

Back in the '80's the sidings at Ashton were in use by the engineering department. I was a guard at Bath Road in those days and we had a tripper job to Ashton on Fridays to form up trains and take them to East Depot for weekend engineering work. Hard work, what with ancient wagons and vacuum brakes ...

Re: Pics of diesels on the Bristol Docks railways?

The fantastic pic of the 37 going over Ashton Swing Bridge on the main page made me think. Are there any more pics around of diesels running on this line, both the Ashton end and the Temple Meads end? I have looked but not spotted any.

Cheers :)

I've got a few:

What kind of mainline diesels? Do you know if it was a daily train or more? I had heard about the shunter tripping the wagons up to the docks. Must have been a fantastic sight. Many thanks

Ashton Meadows and Western Fuels

Hello all

I'm 28 years old so this site has been a goldmine for me. Most of the great stuff on here is just on the edge of my memory so I'm always asking my Dad for info about stuff.

I am really interested in Ashton Meadows and the line up to Western Fuels on the docks. I was wondering if anyone ...
