Some really interesting photos there, Robin. It seems you followed steam both locally and around the country as it steadily declined. We may well have stood next to each other at Normanton, Bath Road and the Isle of Wight ! Thanks for posting them and I look forward to future instalments.

Looking through my 1963 notes I noticed that 1O91 was steam hauled on Saturday August 17, 1963 by Jubilee 45569 Tasmania. It must have backed into Temple Meads to gain access to Barrow Road and carried the reporting number. This day was an eventful one. The Barrow Road Diesel Standby was 73015 and ...

My information on these trains come from the WTT Bristol District 15 June 1964 to 13 June 1965.

The morning train (1O71) 7.35 Nottingham-Bournemouth West passes Charfield at 11.12, calls at Stapleton Road at 11.47, departs from North Somerset Junction (after engine change) at 12.03, and stops at ...

It was a great time, as you say.

You mention 45631 on 1N84 14.15 York.

The photo was taken by David Nicholas - I am the smaller of the two boys on the right of the photo. We must have left Barrow Road Shed soon after the photo and gone ...

In 1964 I have a 'spotter's record' of a summer Saturday express with a reporting number 1O71, 'Peak' hauled, passing Charfield at around 11.15 a.m.

You are absolutely right - having checked the WTT for Summer 1964 there was a 1O71 7.35 Nottingham to Bournemouth West train which ...

46201 attended the Bath Road open day in October 1967.

Here is a colour shot of her going through the closed Mangotsfield station on the way back to Dowty's.

Probably the last steam engine to do so ?

'Trafalgar' is the only Barrow Road Jubilee I can remember with any certainty. I presume she succumbed to the cutters torch on withdrawal. Can you envisage a scenario whereby we could one day see 'Galatea' carrying Trafalgar's name and number? Do we know what happened to her plates ...

Occasionally one train would return at lunchtime and, about an hour later, would be climbing again with an afternoon extra freight.

T803 had an afternoon turn to Hallatrow (not quite sure where that is) and T804 had an afternoon turn to Radstock West.

Both engines had quite a long day ...

However the two regular locomotives from this line, 4103 and 4131, are still apparently in the city in 1964, although they have moved on from SPM to Barrow Road. I can't find any reference to them in the workings, so I am wondering what they were actually doing.

I vaguely recall reading in `Railway Magazine` circa late `65/early`66 that 47276 had been used for filming work around the Bath Green park area , for which it was painted green on one side only(!).
I believe the film was titled "The Wrong Box".

It was indeed called "The Wrong ...

With regard to Jinties, amazingly 47276 was working off Barrow Road from mid-September until Tuesday November 2, 1965. Whether it was initially under repair from Bath (as Robin suggests 47623 was), it was certainly used locally in the six week period, often working what the Roster Board called 8.15 ...
