When I was at school (QEH) on one occasion our bus got stuck at Shirehampton Park Gates in the snow. Several of us (approx 14 yo) left our satchels and bags on the bus and got off to help push it on the icy hill (H&S close your eyes). When it regained traction we all ran and jumped on the open ...

One of the coal merchants using Shire sidings was Lowell Baldwin who had the siding nearest the station and I believe the other might have been used by Silveys.

From a certain Bristol railway website... 'This section of line is known as the Patchway Curve. It came into use on 22nd February 1971, although it has been marked on maps since the 1920s. '

The 1902/04 map on 'Bristol - Know Your Place' shows the course of the chord with 'Railway Under ...

Re: #33 Bus Thread.

Quote by Jules today:- "The associated 22 started from "the dip" at Stoke Bishop and took the current route of the No 40 round the houses on Julian Road. It then crossed The Downs but turned right at the top of Blackboy and served Pembroke Road. From The Centre, it ran along Victoria Street to ...

Train Destination Stickers.

Remember the long stickers that used to be affixed to the last passenger window in each coach. They were white with black type, and listed in LARGE LETTERS the ultimate destination with intermediate stops in a smaller typeface. I am looking for someone who might own a genuine original, a copy or ...

On the grounds of a result about signalling, does anyone know what the locos and rolling stock would have been travelling the severn beach line late 30s to the dmus of the early 60s. I know the midland ran excursions to svb so i can justify a black 5,and there was mention on here of metro tanks in ...

Re: The no. 33 bus route.

I was looking at a Google Earth photo of the swing bridge on Prince Street, A sign says ' Weak Bridge' 3 Ton limit! The #99 bus and many others that started in Prince St. used to all roll over it! Their wheels I recall ran in two steel runways with timber bulks in the centre in between them. That ...

By 1959, the 84 had changed to run from Bromley Heath to Cribbs Causeway via the Downs, which ran for many years.

There was also an 84B which ran from Bromley Heath to Westbury and then took the old 1C route from Westbury to Sea Mills continuing to Lawrence Weston.

Hotwells was then served ...

Re: bus routes

ps I think the route no was no 84 sttarted from the landing stage to Brislington

I believe the 84 ran from Hotwells to Downend before WW2 and after the war it became the 84 and 284. The buses took a circular route in the Downend area and every alternative bus ran the circular leg in the ...

Re: The No. 33 bus thread

Hi Phil,

There were 50 Leyland PD1s in the fleet, all allocated to Eastville depot and therefore as I remember they worked routes 2, 2A, 10, 18, 84, 284 etc.
Half had ECW bodies (eg C4044 - my all-time favourite bus) and the rest had local bodies supplied by Longwell Green or the company's own ...

The problem that Bristol has always suffered from is that the centre of the city (ie the main shopping and commercial areas) are farther away from Temple Meads than most people want to walk. Whilst this isn't necessarily as much of an issue if people are coming into the city from other towns and ...

I remember there was a 'Five Boys' chocolate machine on Platform 9 (now of course P3) immediately after WW2 which displayed 'Empty' for about 4 years. I have no idea if it was ever refilled!

OF COURSE! The O8s had brake vans, the 03s had match wagons. Apologies for being so emphatic earlier that O8s had match wagons - and thanks to "Oldchapie" for pointing this out. My memory has started playing tricks on me!!

Isn't this an 08 with shunter match wagon?
