You might be thinking of the Beatles song "Taxman"

"It's one for you, nineteen for me, coz I'm the taxman ...
If you drive car I'll tax the street
and if you walk, I tax your feet ....
And if your backs against the wall,
be careful I don't take it all ..."

Or words to that effect :D

Ah yes ...

TM Platform Tickets

I seem to remember that in the late 1960s Platform Tickets at Temple Meads were sold from coin-in-the-slot machines.

Am I right, and if so, what did they cost ? The sum of 2d vaguely comes to mind, or was it more like 6d ?

Anyone got a 1968-69 WR timetable ?

Would anyone have a 1968-69 WR passenger timetable - that they could do a 'look-up' for me ?

I used to travel up to Scotland (to college) three times a year and used to get the 1135 from Birmingham NS to Edinburgh.

So I used to catch a (weekday) train to Birmingham from TM at around 0820-0840 (a ...

Yep - but I was only there for 6th Form '65-'67.

The Chem Lab was the top (2nd) floor of the Armstrong (?) Wing, so there was a pretty good view over the road. The sparks from the cutting torches were really spectacular.

Chemistry master was a Mr Thursfield - I can recall feeling a bit guilty at ...

I remember the sidings adjacent to Anchor Rd being removed (oxy-acetylene cutters) sometime 1965-67 - you had a great view from the Cath School Chem Lab !

Staple Hill / Mangotsfield line - Memories and Question(s)

Greetings All

I have joined this group as I have fond memories of travelling out of Temple Meads along the old Staple Hill / Mangotsfield line on my way up to Birmingham when going up to university, and also travelling the other end in Scotland from Leuchars Jn. along the (also long defunct) St ...
