There was a trailing single slip on the up line but this move could potentially block both lines for a while, maybe this is the reason?

Horace, I didn't even realise I could access old OS maps online! I've spent an interesting hour looking at maps from 1887 onwards showing Charfield railway station. I suppose this is a bit off-topic but it does have to do with location of signal-boxes!

The sidings left at shortwood were i belive for the brickworks, which were midway between the westerleigh yard and Mang' north Junction.

so is the branch owned by the quarry firm or network rail now? The line would make quite a nice preservation line too if the trees were cut back thers a nice view of Ladden valley and the old Moor.

I guess not everybody who lives in Thornbury would actually be travelling to Bristol though. There must be a fair few who may just want to go to Yate. There is quite likely a lot of toing and froing between the two places.

The Line never was a busy passenger line it was found from an early time that it was quicker and cheaper to get a bus or "carriage" to bristol, and it still will be.
Dont get me wrong I would love to see the line reopen (not just to passengers), but why go from thornbury to yate then a "s " route to ...

Wont Happen......Grovesend tunnel is in private owner ship and the trackbed there is about 10 feet above the original anyway.
