4th. Foundation stone of the Severn Railway Bridge laid.

2nd. The Midland Railway branch from Berkeley Road to Sharpness opened to freight. Berkeley Road station becomes a junction.

1st. The MR and LSWR jointly lease the S & D, forming the S&DJR.
1st. Bitton signal box opens.
