Redland
Opened on 12th April 1897.
This first set of pics were kindly supplied by Simon Whittingham. My thanks to him :)
A general view of Redland station in the early seventies showing the down platform waiting room.
'Bubble Car' 55033 departs with a service for Temple Meads.
Demolition begins on the booking office and pedestrian footbridge in 1973.
A crane removes a section of the footbridge.
Contractors at work dismantling the footbridge. Members of the Avon Valley Railway removed quite a lot of timber during demolition, but Simon is unsure if any of it has ever been reused at Bitton.
Another view of the demolition work in progress. Health and Safety obviously have no problem with a bonfire alongside the track!
The next set of pics were taken on a cold and dark Christmas Day 2003.
Standing at the end of Redland Station and looking at the view back towards Cheltenham Road. The bridge in the foreground is the one across Redland Road
A look along the length of the platform. The disused Down platform is overrun with greenery.
A look at the station building.
The back of the building.
A look at the station from the other angle.
A look at the frontage of the station.
The chimneys at this station have an unusual bond pattern.
Two bridges still cross the line at Redland Station despite the removal of the station footbridge. An ornate footbridge and the roadbridge of Redland Grove.
About as good a shot that I could get of the footbridge. It carries Lovers Walk, a footpath, across the line.
The view across the bridge with Lovers Walk disappearing into the distance.
A look at the station from the footbridge. The width of the overgrown Down platform is evident. This place must have looked very pretty.. once...
The view from Redland towards Clifton Down. The bridges visible are Hampton Road, Hampton Park and Whiteladies Road.
The exit and entrance to and from the station. Originally the entrance to the station was via the station footbridge which was connected to a booking office on Redland Grove. Both the footbridge and booking office were demolished in the early 1970s.
Some new pics taken during April 2004
143611 stops at the station on its way to Temple Meads with an Avonmouth service.
A quick throw of the throttle and the unit trundles off. In less than a minute it will stop at Montpelier Station.
The pacer disappears across Redland Grove before crossing Cheltenham Road viaduct.
The last time I visited it, the station was closed. This visit reveals that the building is in use by a traditional upholsterist.
| |
The next pic was taken during an engineering blockade at Filton Abbey Wood which resulted in all services that would normally use the line between Parkway/Patchway and Temple Meads being diverted via Avonmouth.
A Voyager passes through Redland on the 14.6.04.
