Since starting this thread, I've found out about the reverse.
Bath Road's class 47s had long range fuel tanks, so every two years, Canton would borrow them for a weekend to haul rugby specials when Wales were away to Scotland. As a result Scottish enthusiasts used to gather at Edinburgh to "cop" the Bristol based 47s.

That would have been the class 47/8's in pool ILRA operated by Cross Country before they were replaced by Voyagers. They were modified with extra fuel capacity and classified as 'Long Range' locos. I can't recall what the total range was but the figure of 450 miles springs to mind. However, I think that was the range of a non-modified loco which had fuel capacity of 850 gallons. 2 gallons per mile sounds about right for a class 47 in general use.

A slightly tenuous link to this thread. In March next year a class 26 will be visiting the S&D Railway Heritage Trust at Midsomer Norton on loan from the Glos/Warks Rly for a few months and in time to participate in the diesel gala. Class 26's were principally associated with Scotland in BR days. Opportunities will be available to 'drive and fire' on this loco as well as the resident 08 shunter and the 03 which is on temporary loan while the industrial shunter D1120 is away being vacuum braked.
