Re: Coronavirus

I heard the other day that a mid-morning weekday service from Paddington to Bristol left London with just seven customers on board. I can well believe that based on my own recent experience, and that was before the thing got to the proportions it is apparently at now. Last Tuesday week, 10th March,...

Re: Railways in the News

...It was seriously suggested that anticipated demand for seats could be reduced by charging a supplement on the normal fare. Translate this to demand for air travel and maybe air fares are simply too cheap. Or taking it one stage further perhaps there are too many people on the planet leading to u...

Re: Railways in the News

Yes you've missed someting  Its not an either/or situation There is no pot of government money that is going to be lavished on HS2 at the expense of everything else. It will be paid for by means of long term loans, perhaps over 50 ir more years. In time, when the project is up and running, ...

Re: Railways in the News

As this is a railway-related forum, we are spared the “views” of some of the anti-HS2 brigade I encounter on more general forums. Whenever I read comments such as “just increase the capacity of existing lines” or “just run longer trains” or “the money would be better spent upgrading the rest of the ...

Re: Railways in the News

As someone who only this week totally misread a ridiculously pro-Brexit post on another forum, and couldn't see the irony in it for the red mist, and also as someone who has form for upsetting people on this forum when they took me seriously in posts that were designed to be tongue in cheek, I'm goi...

Re: Railways in the News

As I understand the proposals there is to be a hub interchange at Old Oak Common for HEX to connect into HS2 and Crossrail services. It was originally intended, once again AIUI, that HS2 was going to link to Heathrow. My own personal view was it being droppped had more political motivation than anyt...

Re: Railways in the News

As Roy has been doing his best keeping this thread going as almost a one-man show, perhaps I ought to pipe up  It appears that this £500m is for feasibility studies, so no-one should be holding their breath waiting for their old local station to reopen. There is always a perceptual problem ...

Re: IET Record Breaking Run

The test run at Badminton is interesting. I cannot recall the station there but the milepost suggests that this working is on the up line. Around that time I would have been the technician accompanying a number of test runs between St Philips Marsh and Swindon so it is possible I was on board this ...

Re: IET Record Breaking Run

There was a test run on 4th October 1976. Here's a rather poor quality shot of it from the time passing Badminton:
