Re: Fishponds - Clifton Down
That has started me thinking about the physical reallocation of locos. I wonder on average how soon a depot's new acquisition actually arrived at its new home and how soon the cast shed plate was physically changed. Not expecting a definitive answer. In blue era diesel days, on the bodyside we affix...

Re: Fishponds - Clifton Down
There was quite a large allocation of 82xxx at Bristol. I assume they were based at Bath Road rather than St Phillips Marsh. Are we forgetting Bristol's other steam depot??? I remember these locos being predominantly used on the Bristol - Bath (Green Park) - Bournemouth services hauling a Bulleid 3...

Re: Mystery trains
Class 47's were officially rated at 95 mph but there was no speed limiting device fitted as there was with HST's. Class 50's were rated at 100mph but I once timed one at 104. Speedometers were calibrated to within 3mph at 100 if my memory serves me correct. I'm not convinced that mileposts were that...

Re: unfitted freight
A further update to clarify, which seems to contradict the earlier answer. Down unfitted freights had their brakes pinned down at Patchway then released beyond Pilning before entering the tunnel at 1 in 100. So in answer to the initial question, there was no restriction on unfitted freights.

Re: unfitted freight
An acquaintance of mine has supplied the following: There was an account of going through the Severn Tunnel in a Locospotters annual either 1960 or 1961 and it discussed the procedure. At the bottom of the incline in the tunnel there were some marker lights which the engine would whistle and the gua...

Re: Spotting in those Early Years
Not seen that one before. It looks like the return trip from the current platform 9. I was there on arrival which would have been at the opposite end, now platform 10. Of course we had a re-enactment of this shot about 10 years ago when 'Sir Nigel' got into an awful slip, damaging the railhead so ba...

Re: Railways on the Big Screen
I agree Andy. I recorded it and fast forwarded approx 30 minutes to the model railway scene. I carried on to the end hoping that it would return to cover the crash scene but to no avail. Might watch the whole thing when I have nothing else to do.

Re: Railways on the Big Screen
For anyone who is confused, in the late 1960's the Gainsborough Model Railway Club were commissioned to build an O gauge model railway for a scene in the film 'Only When I Larf'. I happened to spot that a certain someone had posted on another forum last year that he has been looking out for it to be...

Re: Steamy photos anyone?
Not much wrong with those so thank you for sharing.
Regarding the raft of withdrawn southern locos, I'm sure I read somewhere that they were not allowed through the Severn Tunnel en-route to South Wales so had to go the long way round.
